How to Sow and Plant
Planting Depth:1/2”-1”
Row Spacing:5’
Hill Spacing:2’-3’
Days to Germination: 5-10 days
Germination Temperature: 70°-80°F
Sowing:
Direct sow at least 2 weeks after danger has passed and frost has passed. Sowing can be started when the soil temperature reaches about 15-18 degrees Celsius. Select a suitable area in the arboretum or garden, dig a small trench about 3-4 inches deep, and scatter the Lazy Man’s Watermelon seeds evenly in the trench.
Keep it moist:
Make sure the soil stays moist, but don’t allow water to pool. Watering should not be excessive and avoid flooding, especially in the early stages of seed germination.
Support:
Lazy Man’s Watermelon generally require support to keep the fruit away from the soil surface to prevent rot and insect damage. You can use a trellis or fence to support and protect the watermelons as they begin to form.
Weeding and fertilizing:
After the plants grow, keep the garden clean and remove weeds promptly. Fertilizer can be applied in appropriate amounts to promote plant growth and fruit development.
Bonus:
Typically, the skin color of a Lazy Man’s Watermelon will turn red as it ripens, and the curls around the stem will begin to dry out. At this time, you can tap the fruit lightly with your fingers and hear a hollow sound, indicating that the Lazy Man’s Watermelon is ripe. Fruit can be cut with a sharp knife or scissors, trying not to damage the plant.
